Fairview Mountain Golf Club has Olympic Connection

In a twist of fate, four members of the Fairview Mountain Golf were all fortunate enough to share in the Olympic Torch experience. On January 25th the Olympic torch made its way through the South Okanagan and four lucky members of the Fairview Mountain golf community took part in the truly exhilarating experience of carrying the Olympic Torch on its way to Vancouver for the 2010 Olympic Games. Juleen McElgunn was the 1st of the group to carry the torch as she ran the day before in the community of Grand Forks as the torch made its way on to Osoyoos, B.C. The following day the torch relay began its 1st leg of its trip just outside of Osoyoos where Fairview Mountains GM/Director of Golf, Brian McDonald started the day off as the 1st official torch bearer of the day running the torch down HWY 97 joined by his two beautiful daughters. Fairview member, Norm Houle was next in line and carried the torch towards Oliver much to the appreciation of Norms family and friends whom came out to share in Norm’s special moment. Finally, FMGC Member Services leader, Debbie Olafson carried the torch on its way out of Oliver as the torch made its way to Penticton for a the mid day Olympic festival. All four spoke about how this was “truly a once in a lifetime experience and one they will cherish for the rest of their lives!” Considering the Olympic torch for the 2010 Vancouver Games will cover 20,470 kilometers total distance, 4,912 km on foot, and be carried by only 12,000 people in a country made up of 34 million, this truly is a unique experience to have 4 members of the same golf club carrying the torch. I am sure all will have their own story to tell around the club and all have plans to carry the Olympic spirit forward in the communities in which they live.
